Formal/Informal Type

A fusion of formal and informal type, constructed using architecture research and an original font informed by urban inspired type.

In this experimental typography project, I researched famous architect Antoni Gaudí, and designed my own font. At the beginning, I didn’t know about the similarities between architecture and type. This new knowledge and inspiration lead to this final piece, a blend of a formal booklet layout of Antoni Gaudí research, and informal type using my font. Studying both Antoni Gaudí’s works and type simultaneously, I began to make out letterforms in his building and structures. I incorporated Gaudí’s use of bright colours in the piece, and I created a font based off broken up, stencil like type I saw engraved into concrete.
